Pastured Poultry
Many who believe all chickens should be “free ranged” picture a pastoral setting of blue sky, puffy clouds dotting the horizon, green grass carpeting the hillside with cows contentedly chewing their cud under an apple-laden tree while the chickens scratch unhurriedly in the pasture, clucking with contentment. This setting occurs only in the mind. In reality clouds billow up to black thunderheads and predators lurk at the field edges during the day while roaming the fields at night seeking a satisfying meal! Pastured chickens require a safe haven and need to feel protected.
SQ1F uses 10 ft. x 10 ft. x 2 ft. high floorless portable shelters to keep our chickens safe. They house 50 to 75 birds and are moved daily to fresh pasture. Our chickens receive fresh air, sunshine, exercise, and a non-medicated vegetarian ration. Not to mention all of the natural grasses and seeds (green material) they want. We process some of our chickens on the farm, but most are handled humanely by Backes Poultry Processing in Loose Creek, Missouri. We are very pleased with their operation, and know that Herbert and his crew hold to the same high standards as SquareOne Farms.
